I just got the “congrats” email from the Ellora’s Cave editor. Sold to EC! Well, not quite sold, because I haven’t received the contract and signed it yet, but I’m not letting that stand in the way of having a little celebration
The novella is titled Jaguar’s Claim. And I’m very happy that I found a good home for it.
Here I am, innocently browsing the publishing news at Dear Author, reading that Amazon possibly plans to insert ads into ebooks. I had to let that sink in a moment. Ads in books…wow.
Honestly, I feel compelled to call Amazon, or stop by their head office, and tell them just how much I hate the idea. For many people, myself included, fiction is a way to forget the real world, escape to somewhere else for a short while. I so do not want ads with my escapism, it’s disruptive. So, Amzaon, can I just say thanks, but hell No Thanks to ads in ebooks?
Head on over to ESPAN for an excellent blog post about RWA’s stance on epublising. Deidre Knight, lit agent and author, posted a reply to RWA’s outdated stance on epublishing:
RWA’s current stance on e-books is that a publisher must offer at least a $1,000 advance in order to qualify for legitimacy. Never mind that many digital authors far exceed that amount in royalties, or sell more than 5,000 copies of print editions of their e-published titles. The problem with RWA’s simplistic criteria is that it ignores one crucial fact. Our industry is changing radically, with traditional publishers seeking innovative models for overhauling their distribution and content.
And I just read on the Romance Divas Forum that Diane Pershing, RWA President, is crafting a response which will be posted in a couple of days. This is going to be interesting since I’m always happy to hear both sides of the story. But as an epublished author myself, I strongly feel that RWA needs to move into the into the 21st century and accept epublishing as a viable career for writers.
Update:
Read it yourself: RWA President Pershing Responds
Pershing misses the point on many levels, worse, she is illogical. And this sentence made me laugh:
Each year members threaten to leave because they are displeased with something. Some do; most don’t. No organization can make everyone happy, but RWA goes on, no matter what.
This is short sighted and narrow minded, and this stick-your-fingers-in-your-ears-and-hope-it-will-all-go-away approach is plain dumb business sense.
RWA goes on, now matter what?!
I bet that’s what General Motors once thought too.
And yet another Update at ESPAN:
In A Call to Action, Angela James (Exec. Editor, Samhain Publishing) responds to RWA’s (Pershing’s) stance on epublishing. In short, Ms James has written a long disclaimer that she’s not the right person to respond, but in the end, she is
It’s about recognizing authors, who want to pursue their passion and love of writing and shape it into a career, as being as needful and deserving of advocacy whether they choose a traditional path or one less traveled.
Ms James’s response is thoughtful and to the point, and I hope RWA’s Board of Directors will reflect on it with an open mind and a desire to be the best advocate for all its members.
I’m just quickly recapping my last three weeks:
- Stuffing my possession into moving boxes, about 50 of them. Oh, the joy.
- Stuffing everything into the largest moving truck known to U-haul.
- Driving everything to Vancouver, BC. Yep, that’s Canada. And, by the way, these Border Crossing guys…they come in pretty damn cute sometimes
- De-stuffing my possessions from the truck and the moving boxes…almost worse than packing them in the first place.
And now I’m here in my new home, with very conflicted feelings. I miss Seattle, but I do love Vancouver. If you take one look at the “About” section, you’ll see that I move a lot. But, I am almost sure that I’ll stay in Vancouver for the next one hundred years or so

How to enter? (over 18 Years of Age only)
Head over to Selena Blake’s website!
Last night the History Channel aired the History of Sex, and I was glued to the screen. Some of the world’s earliest literature is about sex, who would have thought. LOL. They covered the Eastern World, everything from China’s pillow books, Arabic poetry and of course India’s Kama Sutra. These cultures have regarded sex not only as natural but also spiritual. It’s PG 14, so no reason to get too excited
Besides horrible traditions such as bound feet, which were considered intensely erotic in China, they also showed some funny habits. At a certain time period (can’t remember which) in China, the man put a sticky little cinnamon ball inside his navel–ancient Viagra. After all, he had to pleasure up to 40 (!) women in one night. Poor Guy! Another man (in India) taught a parrot to say naughty words. The parrot then would be inside the bedroom while he and the girl… you get the picture.
What a brilliant, intimate docu, though. It was totally fascinating to watch how attitudes about sex changed through the ages.
If you have a chance to watch it, don’t miss it!
For whatever reason, my website got royally screwed up. The complete right column disappeared and moved to the bottom of the page. Sigh. And, at least for now, I don’t know why… What a mess.
Update: I fixed it. Yeah
Well, today I’m looking forward to three things.
1. Having lunch with a friend I haven’t seen in a looong time.
2. Overspending on books at my local Borders in the afternoon.
and
3. Watching the 24 Season 7 Finale! Tony is evil and I’m loving it. LOL. Go Jack!
