Story is about conflict–that’s a chestnut every writer knows.  (Or should know.) To help you come up with conflict for your characters, I’ve just stumbled upon a Sticky-Situation-Generator. So, ruin your character’s day, make the story more interesting, and/or have some fun playing what-if:

• You have too many characters. Time to kill one off.
• Create a deadline for whatever conflict your characters are already facing.
• Introduce a character that is dangerous, smart, and slightly sociopathic.

Admittedly, these ideas didn’t help me in writing my current WIP, but it was fun reading all the suggestions anyway.

Another good site to procrastinate is the Seventh Sanctum and their story generator. For example, the generator gave me this idea for a science fiction storyline:

“The story is about a miserly construction worker who is stalked by a nurse. It starts on a frozen planet. The critical element of the story is a legal dispute. Technophillia plays a major role in this story.”
